Graduation Pathways

Pennsylvania students must meet both state and local graduation requirements to earn a high school diploma. Beginning with the Class of 2023, students may demonstrate readiness for college, career, and community through one of five statewide graduation pathways established under Act 158.

The Five Graduation Pathways

  1. Keystone Proficiency Pathway
Earn a score of Proficient or Advanced on the Algebra I, Literature, and Biology Keystone Exams.
  2. Keystone Composite Pathway
Earn the required combined score across the three Keystone Exams while meeting the minimum score requirements established by the state.
  3. Career and Technical Education Pathway
Meet designated requirements through an approved career and technical education program. Evidence may include performance on an industry-based competency assessment, completion of program requirements, or readiness to complete an approved assessment.
  4. Alternate Assessment Pathway
Complete locally established course requirements and demonstrate readiness through an approved assessment or academic measure, such as the SAT, PSAT, ACT, Advanced Placement exam, dual-enrollment course, or another state-approved option.
  5. Evidence-Based Pathway
Complete locally established course requirements and provide approved evidence of college, career, or community readiness. Evidence may include successful completion of advanced or dual-enrollment coursework, acceptance into a postsecondary program, an industry-recognized credential, an internship or service-learning experience, or other qualifying accomplishments.

Students are still required to participate in the Algebra I, Literature, and Biology Keystone Exams for federal accountability purposes. Meeting a Pennsylvania graduation pathway does not replace the school district’s local requirements for credits, coursework, attendance, or other graduation expectations.

Because individual circumstances and qualifying evidence may vary, students and families should work closely with a school counselor to monitor progress and identify the most appropriate pathway.
